“We’re all gonna die!!!!” -12 disciples

So, I was reading my favorite book this morning – the Bible. Specifically, I was reading the book of Luke, chapter 8:22-25. Yeah, it’s the part where Jesus and the disciples are out on the sea when a huge storm comes rolling in. Well, many of these guys were fishermen and had seen their share of storms. This must have been the perfect storm considering their reaction. So, they all run down to Jesus where He was SLEEPING (OMG!) and they screamed like little girls, “We’re all gonna die!” What does Jesus do? He get’s up, calms the storm as though He were making His bed or blowing out a candle – easy stuff for the Son of God.

But then He rebukes His disciples! He says, “Where is your faith?” For as long as I have been familiar with this story, I have never understood why He said that. Yes, I’m a little slow. But if you are as slow as me, let me share with you what the Holy Spirit revealed to me this morning.

My first thought was, what were the disciples SUPPOSED to do? I mean, they were about to get swept away by this storm as far as they knew; and Jesus was taking a nap! Were they supposed to just sit there? And then it hit me.

OF COURSE they were supposed to wake up Jesus! Isn’t that what having a savior is all about? He should be the first One we go to for EVERYTHING – good OR bad. The reason they didn’t have any faith is because they were AFRAID. They were so afraid of dying that they couldn’t see past their own nose to the Person that was in the boat with them! Perhaps a more appropriate response for the disciples would have been, “Hey, Jesus, can you please calm this storm? Or not. Either way, we know you will take care of us. You WILL calm the storm? SWEET! I want to watch! Thank you, Jesus.”

Thank you, Jesus.

Going through a scary storm? Don’t be afraid. Just go talk to Him for awhile and wait and see what He will do!

God Promptings

So… I was awakened from my slumber this morning at about 4:15 (I think)… in Sterling, Kansas… in a strange person’s bed (we’re staying with Brad and Pattie Nix… great friends… though Brad IS strange!)… and God told me to get my rear out of bed and pray.  I was prompted to pray for our new friends at Westbrook Baptist Church and Venue 302 in Hutchinson.  God is doing mighty things among the people in Hutchinson… smack in the middle of Kansas… who would have thunk it?!  I prayed for our upcoming morning service at Venue Sterling and for the Youth Alive service back in Hutchinson.  I prayed for each of our churches that we are away from this weekend… Highland Terrace, Trinity Baptist, Trinity Fellowship, Ridgecrest…

Then I popped onto Facebook, curious to see what other crazy folk were out there up at hours of the day that I sometimes forget exist… there was my friend, Sarah Thompson… in India… where it’s not such a crazy time of the day (it’s actually mid-afternoon).  Sarah asked me to pray for her lost friends there in India… so I did… This morning, Sarah’s burden for the lost became my burden for the lost.  I’m hoping today that my burden for the lost will become your burden for the lost… will you pray for Sarah Thompson and her friends in India… will you pray for life-changes on the campus of Sterling College… pray for the people desperately searching for hope today in the greater Hutchinson, Kansas and Greenville, Texas area… and pray for us… that we become empty vessels that long for nothing but to give God all glory and honor.

God prompted me this morning… He’s probably prompting you as well… are you snoozin’?
